Specialty Dentistry
Why do patients seek the
care of a specialist?
Patients look for specialists
when they want to have an expert provide their health care service
in dentistry or medicine and are looking for the finest, longest-lasting treatment available.
Do I have to be referred
by a doctor to see a dental specialist?
Anyone can seek out the care
of a dental specialist - all you need is a phone book or
the Internet, and a desire for quality services.
What dental specialists are
there?
There are eight recognized
specialities in Dentistry, but the most common are the first six:
-
Prosthodontists and
Maxillofacial Prosthodontists (like Dr. Wada) treat patients
who are seeking the longest-lasting, highest-quality restorative
dentistry available, (crowns, bridges, dentures, dental implants,
partial dentures, cosmetic dentistry, fillings, veneers, etc.).
Prosthodontists are experts in all types of restorative
dentistry, repairing, restoring, and replacing teeth. They
also treat patients who have pain or noises in their
jaw joints, and patients who have problems with ill-fitting
partials or dentures. Prosthodontists are experts in
helping people keep their teeth, even if they have had years
of dental problems and lost teeth in the past. Prosthodontists
also provide therapy for dysfunctional jaw joints (TMJ Therapy).
A Maxillofacial Prosthodontist receives even more training
beyond that of a Prosthodontist. A Maxillofacial Prosthodontist
is trained to diagnose and treat complex head and neck
problems requiring prosthetic rehabilitation and/or restoration.
Maxillofacial Prosthodontists are also experts in cosmetic
dentistry.
-
Periodontists are
dentists who are experts in helping patients maintain healthy
gum tissue and the bone that supports teeth. Patients
who have a history of gum disease are commonly treated by
a Periodontist. Periodontists, as well as Oral Surgeons, are
experts in surgically placing implants. Periodontists
are also gum "Plastic Surgeons." They can improve
a patient's smile by working with a Prosthodontist when he
is providing cosmetic dentistry.
-
Oral Surgeons are
specialty dentists who are experts in tooth extractions
and surgery of the face and jaws. Many times, a Dentist will
refer a patient to an Oral Surgeon for tooth extractions
or surgical placement of implants.
-
Endodontists are
dentists who are specifically trained to provide root canals.
When my patients need root canals, I always send them
to an Endodontist to ensure their comfort and the success
of the root canal. Root canals can fail, if not properly
done.
-
Orthodontists are
experts in moving teeth with braces or other appliances. There
are many excellent Orthodontists in our community. Contact
Dr. Wada's office if you would like a referral.
-
Pediatric Dentists
are experts in children's dentistry. Taking your child
to a Pediatric Dentist can ensure a fun, positive experience
for your child.
-
Oral and Maxillofacial
Pathologists are experts in
oral disease (mouth lesions).
-
Dental Public Health
consists of specialists who are experts in dental and
public health.
